A Country-Living Reality Check I Didn’t Ask For
Living in the country comes with a certain charm — the trees, the space, the quiet, the stars…
But nobody warns you about the moments that blindside you, like waking up, turning on the faucet, and realizing:
Oh.
There’s no water.
None.
Not a drip.
Not a sprinkle.
Not even a polite “psst.”
Just silence.
Dry, echoing, mocking silence.
And suddenly every single thing you took for granted becomes the crisis of the century.
🌾 Country Living: Where Independence Meets Reality
People love to romanticize “country life.”
“It must be so peaceful!”
“You’re so lucky!”
“I wish I lived where it’s quiet!”
Okay, yes — the sunsets are cute. The deer are adorable. The air is clean.
But let me tell you something:
When you lose water in the country, it hits different.
There’s no city line to call.
No magical municipal worker who shows up in a reflective vest and solves your problems.
It’s you.
Your well.
Your pump.
Your sanity hanging by a thread.
Country living teaches you how to be
handy, resourceful, patient,
and just a little unhinged.
💀 The Panic Spiral Is Real
You don’t realize how much water rules your life until it disappears.
Within five minutes I went from mildly annoyed to full existential crisis:
I can’t shower.
I can’t wash dishes.
I can’t run laundry.
I can’t even wash my hands like a civilized human.
Why do we even have kids?
Why does anyone have pets?
Why is every single thing in life dirty right now?
Is this how settlers lived?
Am I… a settler???
It’s a spiral.
A chaotic, dusty spiral.
🙃 The Universe: “Here’s a Lesson You Didn’t Ask For.”
Look — I’m all for personal growth.
But not before coffee.
And definitely not with no water.
But the universe has a favorite hobby:
humbling me.
It reminds me that as much as I juggle, handle, push through, and keep going…
I’m still human.
And I depend on things I blow past every day without appreciating:
Hot water.
Cold water.
Any water.
Showers.
Clean cups.
Washing my face.
Not having to think about it.
Things that quietly make life smoother…
until you don’t have them.
💛 Gratitude (The Kind You Don’t Learn Until Life Gets Messy)
As much as this sucks — and trust me, it SUCKS —
moments like this force you to realize how much we take for granted.
Running water is not “little.”
It’s not “simple.”
It’s not “automatic.”
It’s a privilege.
One that becomes crystal clear the very second you lose it.
And sometimes gratitude isn’t this soft, gentle, meditative thing.
Sometimes it’s loud.
And inconvenient.
And shows up in the form of a broken pump and a very desperate trip to Tractor Supply.
But still — it’s gratitude.
🧡 I’m Not Okay… But I’m Learning
So here I am, in the country, with no water, trying to keep my sanity intact while the universe throws one more lesson at me.
I’m annoyed.
I’m tired.
I’m frustrated.
And I’m absolutely not okay.
But I’m also learning:
that the little things are never little,
that country life is beautiful and brutal,
and that gratitude sometimes grows best in the inconvenient moments.
And when the water finally comes back?
I’m taking the longest, hottest, most spiritual shower of my life.
Amen.
